The grant agreement of the European infrastructure for spectroscopy, scattering and imaging of soft matter, EUSMI, was signed on 28 April 2017. With this a new platform wass created to support the community of European soft-matter researchers and extend their research by covering important aspects of soft matter characterization, synthesis, and modeling. EUSMI is a combination of a full suite of coherent key infrastructures with the corresponding scientific expertise from 15 top-level institutions. It offers access to a large number of researchers who operate at different levels of the value chain ranging from fundamental science to applied research..
It will become a real upgrade of the preceding ESMI project which set the standard for the last five years. Joint research activities are going to advance continuously the already existing infrastructure to enable the users to work always with the most advanced techniques and methods, ranging from chemical synthesis of a full set of soft-matter materials, up-scaling of laboratory synthesis, advanced material characterization by specialized experimental installations, including large-scale facilities, to modeling by high-performance supercomputing. The establishment of an ambitious networking programme will improve communication and dissemination of results. It offers possibilities for training upcoming scientists as well as continued education of established researchers.
